The traditional foods of the Jewish Holidays are symbolic of each celebration and reflect the season at which it takes place. Try playing word association: blintzes______, latkes_______, matzah_______, you get the point! And when it comes to welcoming Rosh Hashanah, without a doubt, apples and honey are the most iconic ones.
Together, the fruit and the golden nectar, are pure deliciousness, so enjoying them as part of our holiday meal is quite a treat! In my family, apples with honey are requested all the way from Rosh Hashanah until the following spring, when apples, slowly going out of season, are not as tasty as they are in the Fall. The crunch of the apples with the sweet, floral gooeyness of the honey are simply irresistible, and they inspired us to create a whole meal using the combination to wish for a Happy and Sweet New Year, from beginning to end; or in culinary terms, from appetizer to dessert.
